MY RECCOMENDATION: Before the 19th century came to a close, this oil was the backbone of oil painting. This particular oil flows more smoothly and doesn't turn as yellow as flaxseed oil. It's just the thing for using with whites, keeping their color true without the yellowing that can happen with linseed oil over time. The walnut oil, though, takes its sweet time to dry, which isn't what I'm looking for in underpainting. However, it's a real helper when I'm working with lead white, making the drying process longer, so I can handle the color on the canvas or palette for an extended period. I also mix this oil for oiling up, combining it 50/50 with turpentine or mineral spirits.
